(AP) — NEW YORK – Manhattan’s top prosecutor is stepping up efforts to combat computer crimes ranging from money laundering to child pornography.
District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. called the Internet “the crime scene of the 21st century” as he announced plans Tuesday to broaden an existing identity theft division. Former New Jersey state consumer affairs director David Szuchman (SUHCH’-man) will lead the effort.
Plans call for computer-crimes training for about 80 of Vance’s assistant prosecutors. About 10 will work fulltime on cyber crime.
Vance says his office already tackles more than 200 identity theft cases per month.
Szuchman worked on Internet safety issues in his New Jersey post and previously as a federal prosecutor.
